The Ritual Begins | Author: Atlan (January 5, 1999)
Occured On: ??
The Player-quest run by Atlan of PaxLair continued when the Dark Omen was seen performing rituals at the Counselor Guild in Serpent Hold, around the Ahnk in the Empath Abbey near Yew, in the Lycaeum in Moonglow.
Disturbing news was heard throughout the lands of late. The minions of N. were seen performing some sorts of vile rituals, one in each of the Citys of Principles. Seemingly, they choose the location with great care, as instructed by their master. |

MYSTERY LOCATION - January 13, 1999 - Author Unknown
Being awoken to her masters, Dell was
summoned to join the Clan of Vampires in a valley of their ritual
gatherings. It was to be here that they would seal their hold on Dell, thus
sending a permanent and unwavering message to the citizens of Corwyn that
they are not ones with which to trifle.
The ceremony began which required all of the Vampires to remain within
the Circle of Enchantment. During the ceremony, a groan echoed throughout
the stone valley, "Uhhhhhnnnnn.....". One of the mysterious creatures known
only as "a lost one" had appeared in the midst of the CoV. Looking
bewildered and confused it seemed to listen to the events transpiring. Many
of Dell's former companions found their way to rescue her. The battle cries
were shouted out as the mystical Corp Por was flung about the area, an
Energy Vortex was also thrown in the midst of the Vampires and did fell one
us. Arrows flew to their marks and three of her rescuers were forced to flee
- two were not so fortunate. |

PAXLAIR - January 15, 1999 - Vincent de l'os
It
started out simple enough. A blue skeleton had been spotted from time to
time in the northern woods, near Paxlair. It seemed relatively harmless,
even peaceful, and also spoke of wishing to be released from something.
After a time, many began to suspect that there was not just one skeleton,
but many.
On the evening of this Wednesday past, proof was finally found that
indeed, multiple of these so-called “lost ones†exist. In fact, they began
to run amok near the Paxlair Tower, attacking any innocent by-standers that
happened to be there. They appeared to be looking for something, and yet
when confronted, they ran towards the south.
As several brave souls gave chase, the sight that they were greeted
by was one to shock even the most hardened of adventurers. In the woods
stood a strangely colored moongate, oddly named “Suicide Deviceâ€Â.
Surrounding it, amongst the bones and blood-spills, were a multitude of
blue-robed individuals, and more of the strange skeletal beings. They
instantly took to combat, viciously defending this apparent gate of death.

PAXLAIR - January 19, 1999 - Winfield
Hail to one and all!
I am Mayor Winfield, an old man and servant to all in PaxLair and on
the Chesapeake Shard of Ultima
Online. Today,
PaxLair is One Year Old!!
Mayor Winfield |
The Mayor in Deep Thought |
On this joyous day, I would like to say a few things about where PaxLair
has been and where it is going. I offer my ideas to continue PaxLair's well
established role in offering openness and opportunities to
players on the Chesapeake Shard. The second year of PaxLair should prove to
be a period of reaching out with our limitless imaginations to new and
unique ideas for a player-town. With this in mind, allow me to reflect back
a bit about PaxLair in 1998, then on to ideas for PaxLair's second year .
1998: PaxLair was Firmly Established
PaxLair was established on January 19, 1998 by The Band as
a town to focus diversified interests within a guild of over 100 members.
After a few months, we noticed PaxLair proved to be a "hot spot" for not
just The Band, but for many guilds and non-guilded people passing through
the wilderness area between Vesper and Yew.

PAXLAIR - February 8, 1999 - Arik,
Grandmaster Smith
Last night whilest in the town of PaxLair, Valen was
speaking of the actions of "N" and informing the local citizens of his evil
nature. These were the words from his song, a song that captivated all time
and time again. As soon as I showed up to the mass of people, I was cursed
at, spit at, and even threatened to be torn apart by the Black Knight
Darius. At first he was simply a panther talking to me telepathically, but
then he transformed to his hauntingly powerful human self.
After making quick apologies, I hastened away from the group but still
within ear shot. Valen spoke of the Lycaeum holding a clue to a ritual being
performed this eve. The mages from the CMT (Chesapeake Mage Tower, a new
powerful group of mages) provided gates to the island of Moonglow. A monk
was found and we spoke to him about N and were told that he had a map
recently. When asked to see it, he promptly told us that the map had been
stolen by the evil Dark Omen moments earlier, but that he had been copying
it at the time. He handed us a partial map which held small clues. Four
libraries were mapped and we felt certain that these held clues to the
ritual planned for tonight. Visiting the libraries we came upon the

PAXLAIR - February 13, 1999 - Winfield
Tribe Arrives in PaxLair |
Last night, PaxLair was astonished by the arrival of two
dark-skinned people dressed in deer headdresses and carrying mighty spears.
They spoke a strange language barely understandable to the people gathered
near the Mage Tower. "Da gander one has voisic uv pax lair moi moi voisic",
the one Elder Tribeswoman known as Niamba said to us. After some time we
figure out that "Da gander one" is "The Greater One" and has a "vision" of
PaxLair. All wondered what this vision could be and came to learn the Shaman will come to PaxLair Wednesday at 10 bells before midnight by
the eastern sky (10PM Eastern). The Tribe appeared to be very
friendly and not threatening to PaxLair. We will know more when we speak to
their Shaman. It appears the Shaman may speak Britannian better than than
Niamba and Malabo.
Tribe at the Healers
and Chapel House |
Rhyssand, the PaxLair Master Healer, took Niamba and Malabo, an Elder
Tribesman, on a short tour of the town showing the Healers and Chapel house
and the arena. In the course of the tour, the group found that the Tribe
does not like magic nor orcs; they mentioned "Malaki" and when someone said
the name back, they went into a raging frenzy. Christopher Wren, Cain the
Druid, Sharona, and Ore Hound accompanied Rhyssand. Mayor Winfield, having a
bit of trouble understanding the Tribe's language, followed and asked
questions through others who could decipher their language better.

PAXLAIR - February 19, 1999 - Jeremy Green
This evening in the fair city of Paxlair an odd occurrence took place
that left many people baffled and grasping for answers. The abduction of an
old gypsy lady, by the name Gaella; a woman who supposedly found immortality
through a curse long ago.
The scene started with the gypsy lady wandering into town muttering
about darkness and death. Many at first dismissed her words and thought
little of her. Until, that is, she began to mention Alanna, a troubled young
woman who went missing the week before. This drew quite a gathering of
concerned people as many sought to save Alanna from her fate.

THE CHAMBER OF VIRTUE, BRITAIN - April 11, 1999 - Atlan, blind sage
of PaxLair
Since he first introduced himself in the player-city of
PaxLair, the mysterious character only known as "N." never showed, but
instead used his minions and crystals of communication to plot and scheme
and manipulate.
Some time ago, he made the citizens of PaxLair and others believe, that
the knowledge of how to stop him was hidden in a Book of Rituals. Eager to
retrieve said Book -it was used to open a portal into the netherworlds at
that time, probably to assure we would try to get it- we stumbled into a
well-crafted trap...
Or so it seems in review. The battle for the Book was hard and seemed
only to approve what we suspected. Thus, we began to decipher the encrypted
texts of the Book to put an end to N. and his plans. With time and research
i, Atlan the blind, was able to gather the information we sought. |

On this day after a meeting of the PaxLair
Knights, Guards, Citizens, and Visitors of PaxLair, PaxLair established a
resident evil group within the boundaries of the PaxLair town. This group,
PxE, is destined to be a balancing force within PaxLair with the Knights
(PxK) as good and the Guards (PxG) as neutral. The new group, led by Azure
Drake, received a guildstone in the PaxLair Inn from Mayor Winfield. PxE is
for evil [roleplaying]. This framework should lead to many events, quests,
and respectable cooperation between people. Please welcome the Evil folks.

VARIOUS LOCATIONS - April 26, 1999 - Bell
In the Tower of Souls a plan is conceived, a plan hatched
to deliver the prisoner Darkon into the keeping of Mazrim. For this night's
events, the Kindred and nine soulslaves would escort Darkon from Vesper to
the Tower of Souls. A message was found in PaxLair, alerting its people of
Mazrim's attempt to move Darkon. Immediately the search for Darkon began.
Meanwhile, the soulslaves began to gather, as did the Clan of Vampires for
the task ahead. Darkon was present, surrounded by hordes of soulslaves and
helpless to escape his captors. Once the soulslaves were assembled, the
march began.
Just before the outskirts of Aryslan, the first of the rescuers was
discovered. Quickly, he turned tail and fled, presumably to find his
companions. Within a matter of seconds, the first cries of battle were
heard. The mortals began their charge on the horde of soulslaves, one ...
two ... three ... one after another, they fell before the blackened souls.
Feasting upon the fallen and lusting for more blood-soaked corpses. This
battle was unlike any battle seen by mortal and immortal. Heroes, with great
numbers, swarmed about - attacking, killing, dying, yet never ceasing in
their onslaught. Their numbers were endless, wave after wave came,
eventually felling the soulslaves and a few of the Kindred.

Thursday, 4th day in the 2nd month of the rule of
Wolfgang.
The young king Wolfgang has claimed his fathers throne against all odds;
not at least with my humble help, his majesty was able to overcome the
threat of the waring nobles. He will be a good king, hard from all the
cruelty he had to commit, but just and good. It only sickens me, when i
think of THEM... the Dark Monks used their vile powers to help him, true.
But i dislike them nonetheless. They exceed too much power and i don't know
WHY they helped him in the first place... their plans are a mystery to
anyone. But i overheard some rumors... the elves may know more than they say
about the Dark Monks.
15th day in the 2nd month of Wolfgangs rule.
The wedding will be today. Again, THEY have planned it, exceeding their
powers over the young king. It is a political marriage, needed to unite the
lands, but it would have been a wiser choice to marry the daughter of Lord
Blake of Jhel's Home to bind his knights and ships to the kingdom. But no,
the Monks voted for the duchess of the off-landish island of Maginia, which
has no strategical position against the Lords of the south! Why are they so
interested in this marriage?

PAXLAIR - May 14, 1999 - Genn Wintord
With slow steps, Seer Daemeon made his way to a bench near the Spring
of Knowledge in PaxLair. Wrapping faded robes closer about his thin form, he
stared at the tainted well. All watching who knew him understood why his
gaze would be drawn to this corrupt spot of evil. It was the whole of his
existence. For near a year he had studied this spring in hopes of gleaning
some knowledge as to how it could be cleansed. Others had offered to aid in
his endeavor, but ultimately it stood untouched; a swirling pool of blood
full of the souls of innocents.
As those in the area noticed his presence, many came to inquire about
his health and any news he might hold as to relieving his suffering. His
short answer filled many with excitement, “There is a cure.†In a tired
voice Daemeon explained to those who remained that after careful research he
had found a cure to the ailment. When a suitable group had gathered around
he spoke of what was needed. |

PaxLair. In a ceremony atop the Mage Tower roof, Mayor Winfield made it
known to all that Tycho Veg had performed marvelously as a leading official
within the town. His merits included diplomacy with all groups, evil and
good; his caring nature for the citizens and visitors of the town; and his
self-sacrifice to become marked as a murderer, not because he is a murderer,
but to prove the point that PaxLair is open to all murderers who come in
peace and as a solid symbol of balance! |

Tirian, the PaxLair Tour Guide and Golden Knight, reported
to Mayor Winfield today that he was attacked yesterday by an assassin named
Aeis Fen in PaxLair. Even though Tirian overpowered the assassin, Tirian
fell to a lethal dose of poison. Aeis Fen appears to be a hired assassin yet
may not hold any personal ill-will towards PaxLair or anyone in particular.
His employers in this attack were called "The Dark" which may or may not be
short for the Dark Omen.
The Mayor was deeply disturbed by Tirian's report and vowed to alert the
townsfolk to keep an eye out for assassins hired by "The Dark". Tirian
stated quietly, while looking around to see if anyone was listening, that he
recalled something of a threatening book in the town's Sanctuary from "The
Dark". Little more is known about this threat. The people of the lands must
learn more of "The Dark" before they hire another assassin and strike again.

For all those familiar with PaxLair, you should know that
the PaxLair Guards (PxG) have taken a 'leave of absence'. Obsidian Dragon,
Captain of the PxG, disbanded the guard just a week or two ago. The guards
were having trouble enforcing the laws and ways of PaxLair.
Around that time PaxLair officials were trying out a new system to deal
with people that came to PaxLair with intent to cause harm. Obsidian Dragon
stated that when the new murder system was put in place (the one with the
two different counters), the guards started having problems staying blue. As
Obsidian Dragon explains, this actually caused more problems then it
prevented for PaxLair.

PAXLAIR - May 24, 1999 - Scribe Griffon
Acting on advice from a lady in dressed all in green,
Aurora set out to find the city of PaxLair. Now Aurora had been staying in
the Counselors Guildhall in Britain, where they fed her and gave her a small
place to stay. It was elder Somberlain who pointed out that PaxLair could be
found North of the Mountains past the Shrine of Compassion. With Hello the
storyteller beside her they went to the town, there was much quiet that
night, and they met not a soul. Aurora later learned that the streets of
PaxLair are not safe at certain times. They looked around and found many
fine vendors still selling their wares. Near the West End of town, a
Lizardman attacked Hello, the Lizardman won in the end, and Aurora fled with
his belongings, leading his ghost to the shrine of compassion. Due to the
lateness of the night, they chose to camp at the shrine, but in the morning
when she woke, Hello was not there. Returning to the city, she found it
alive with activity.
In a tavern men met to discuss their plans about what to do with the
problems the city faced. Aurora felt out of place and stepped outside, but
was followed by a knight named Kyle. After they talked a bit, the knight,
offered to escort her to Britain, it was possible that Hello had returned to
the city. They talked of much along the way, and arrived safely. In town
Aurora gathered a few items left at the Guildhall, not having found any sign
of Hello, and decided to return to PaxLair.

During a recent trip to PaxLair, I was pulled aside by an
acquaintance, who, for now, shall remain nameless. He proceeded to tell of
an Oracle, also referred to as The Lady of the Woods, which had been located
recently by himself and a bard friend of his.
After the bard entertained the Lady with songs of the woodlands, which
she seemed to enjoy immensely, she proceeded to tell them that Ancient Texts
would soon be delivered to a City "Blessed by the Gods".
Which city, when they would be delivered, and what is in the texts is
still a mystery.
My informant believed that the city the Oracle referred to was PaxLair,
but that is only an educated guess at the moment. |

Ah, you ask about the rules in PaxLair. A long time ago, we worked hard
to establish a detailed set of rules. These worked well for us for quite some time and many
people and visitors of PaxLair still tend to follow them when they can.
Yet any rules or laws in an open wilderness town are hard to enforce.
Existence of such rules gives rise to an expectation of protection and quick
justice by town officials. Such an expectation, as a result of specific
rules, could not be specifically met time and time again as our town changed
in culture and residency. We experienced, through our attempts to strictly
follow and enforce the rules, that we encountered many debates, bad scenes
and incidents, and errors in justice. This created a very confused and
difficult environment for people to achieve their main goals for which they
come to PaxLair. Most people's goals go well beyond raising the sword or the
halberd against criminals; most work very hard to create emotion and a sense
of culture around themselves and the town in general.

PAXLAIR - May 30, 1999 - Pfredd Mudd
Friday night a grandmaster mage, 'the infamous Cattica'
appeared in PaxLair, asking for adventurers to help her recover a treasure.
Well, since she said she'd decoded the map using magic, most ignored her at
first, until she did a divination for me, telling me something only a few
knew. At that point, even though I still doubted the magic involved, we
began gathering folk together. After a short search, we had roughly 20 folks
gathered, some constantly asking her if it was a 'level 5' map, which seemed
to confuse her to no end.
After preparations were complete, we jumped through gates to Vesper,
then walked the graveyard road south and then out into the forest, ignoring
the stares of passersby at the large group (and frightening a couple of
folks.) We reached the crossroads by the gate to buc's den, examined the map
again, and Lord Darius led the charge south into the woods. As we came close
to the spot, a horde of headless attacked us, which led some to conclude
this was no ordinary map.

The mage Cattica, it seems, has asked for her ingredients,

As the night went on, the bard Jhym came by town and sung a song he'd
just written, the 'Oracle of the Forest'. In the song, that line became
significant to Aurora, causing her to jump up and gather her things for the
journey to the site mentioned. A small group of adventurers joined her, as

The footsteps sounded light, but haunted from

through the dark corridors toward the Hall. A desperate look on her face,
she tried to hasten her pace even further without beginning to run. Faster, she thought, i must not disappoint him.
She had almost reached the massive iron doors that protect (trap,
a thought flashes through her mind) the Hall as she hears the voice calling
for her, stopping her cold and then lurching her forward through the doors: "Melina! I am waiting..."
Steadying her pace and catching her breath, she stepped through the doors
into the vast cavern of the Hall. Dropping her gaze, she avoided to look at
the bed-like altar in the middle of the room and concentrated on the red
glow of the crystal, from which the voice sounded. "I am here, master."

I do not often get to PaxLair but when I do, I make it a
point to visit the Ladies there now. Ye may recall that I wrote to you about
Aurora not long ago, well I thought I should check up on her, and I fear I
have missed a lot. Her tale I shall relate here shortly, but I must
apologize for it's length even as such I have cut much out, so if you have
any questions, I encourage you to seek out those involved and ask them of
it.
The doors of the Ladies of the Lair tavern opened very early, though most
patrons were still sleeping of a night of good food and wine, Aurora was
cleaning up early with the sunrise, when another early riser came in. She
looked like she had not even slept that night, but was clutching a well read
and ancient tome. She introduced herself as Cattica, a mage of some sort by
the dress of clothes she wore. Aurora welcomed her warmly as she tries to do
with all guests, and asked how she could help. This surprised the mage for
some reason, so Aurora explained that this is what the lair does, helps
weary travelers forget about their troubles. Cattica said "Very well I need
to find many things, but have not the time to get them and study this book
both, I need them by Tuesday Evening" Aurora agreed to help even before
hearing what she needed. "Here is what I need:" she said reading from the
book.

Aurora herself asked for the tears from the Oracle, and did accept
responsibility for their use.The mage Cattica seems to have died after
drinking a foul potion made from all the ingredients, leaving the Slayer in
her place.

It was dark in Luigi's Pizzeria, yet I could hear quiet giggling, feet
shuffling, and the unmistakable sound of an Orc burping. Then Juseck of Aiur,

Juseck of Aiur: It is a disaster! No one is here....

PAXLAIR - June 10, 1999 - Ellie Drakor
It was a quiet evening, one where my friend Gayde and I would ask "Why do
we just drink ale and talk? We could hunt or dig up treasure?"
Well, I decided to buy a map for treasure, "Oh My!" I exclaimed "Gayde the
ladies have a map for sale let me buy it, and adventure!"
Well we were not geared up good before it happened, Tomer had come into town
earlier looking for LSD. Now I was aware that LSD was around (dancing around
tables in Pax Lair Town Square) and knew something was up, Tomer was ready for
war, but had three of the most AWESOME weapons you will ever see, White
Wyrms!!!
Tomer had killed all but one of the LSD members when Dread lady Rose ran into
the house of the Ladies Of The Lair. She ran and hid behind the counter. "Uh
Oh" Penthor, Gayde, Cobalt and myself exclaimed. Well it happened, Tomer
killed her but left us to spare.

N meets with Hephaestus |
Beware, Britannia!
Not long ago, the one known as N. -or Nedemor- made preparations for
something. We all expected it to be something sinister, but surely noone
thought of what really happened, although it was foreseeable. Today, a
ranger that was brave enough to hunt near the Dark Spire, entered the city
of Gehenna. While he edged closer and closer out of curiosity, he heard a
strange metallic sound. As he clanced around the corner toward the front
entrance of the Spire, he saw a huge figure that stalked inside with
mechanical movements.
With his keen eyes, sharpened in numerous hunts, he realized that this
was not a human being, but rather the shape of a human, made up out
of parts of armor and other materials. Not unfamiliar with the happenings in
PaxLair, it dawned on him that this had to be one of the Golems that were
stolen by... this had to be him! Nedemor, who was using this body
to visit the Dark Spire.
