Recent events have left our beloved PaxLair in turmoil.  Tensions mount as PaxLair City and PaxOku City inch closer and closer to War.

Mayor Winfield  speaks of his concern

I found Mayor Winfield at the Tea House in PaxOku early Monday morning, April 10, 2006 and obtained the following interview from him.

"Thank you for the brief interview, Tatania," Mayor Winfield said as the reporter and the Mayor sat in his office in the Tea House in PaxOku.  "I am dreadfully concerned with the situation that happened yesterday."

"The situation seems to have cascaded out of control.  It was a situation of a mere trade sanction placed upon PaxLair City by the Viceroy of PaxOku.  Viceroy Gareth said he did this due to rising evil in PaxLair City and did not want that evil to affect PaxOku."

"Then Viceroy Darius of PaxLair City ordered a toll at the Homare-jima gate at the SW end of PaxOku.  Deputy Viceroy Dutchess carried this out collecting tolls from each person coming through the gate."

"But then, the Mayor of Zento appeared and immediately declared war on PaxLair, not just PaxLair City, but all of PaxLair.  I think the Mayor of Zento is a bit unbalanced if you ask me.  I averted the war by agreeing to have PaxLair City stop the toll or move it into PaxOku city limits.  This would avoid any confrontation with Zento-claimed grounds."

"Once I brought this agreement back to the toll at the gate, Lord Darius, the Viceroy of PaxLair City arrived and said he would not move the toll at the gate.  That Darius did not care for matters with Zento.  I was troubled.  But it seems all things tend to work out in the end, or do they?"

"By simplistic fate it seems, Viceroy Gareth arrived from PaxOku and proposed the toll at the gate become a PaxOku establishment and be taxed two times the toll fees being collected.  Taxation beyond one's resources seems a bit stringent, but I saw Lord Darius go along with it, probably with a plan up his platemail sleeve."

"So since PaxOku claimed the Gate as PaxOku territory, PaxOku would deal with Zento, not PaxLair City or PaxLair.  And PaxLair City therefore had a legitimate establishment in PaxOku.  All the legalities thus seemed to have worked themselves out."

"But when Gareth tried to immediately collect taxes, and did not receive the accurate amount from PaxLair City, he was up in arms.  So much so that he declared his fealty to the Mayor of Zento and not me!  He was pulling PaxOku out of PaxLair over a problem between two PaxLair cities.  And he is renaming PaxOku to Homare-oku.  Now this has me very concerned. Very concerned."

"Now I am informed that PaxLair City is assembling forces to help hold the PaxLair community of cities together. I do not and will not recognize PaxOku seceding from PaxLair at all.  In fact, I may have to appoint a new Viceroy to take over PaxOku while we sort out the mess and find out why Gareth is so enamored with Zento."

"I have great confidence in the loyalty of PaxLair City leadership and citizens.  And the citizens of PaxOku too.  I hate to see people caught up in politics of our government. Lord Darius has sworn to me to help keep the balance even if that means a few more evil entering PaxLair City to offset the good in other cities.  The PaxLair Community is all about balance."

"I fear there may be some skirmishes coming, but I ask all our cities to bind together in this day of crisis.  Minimize any conflict and follow orders of their captains in the field."

"Long live PaxLair."

Viceroy Darius speaks of his loyalty

Tuesday evening, April 11, 2006 I was received by Viceroy Darius and Deputy Viceroy Dutchess at the Necromancer's Tower [twin tower] in PaxLair City Felucca.

"I thank you for taking time to talk with me for this PaxLair Times Interview. I wish your words of the events of late... Your thoughts of the matters... Perhaps your vision of the future." Tatania told Darius.

Darius replied, "Simple. We placed a toll at the gate to PaxOku. We did this because of the trade sanction. A toll would cause them to lift the sanction. PaxOku would lose resources too fast. PaxOku decided otherwise."

"To our enjoyment, we now have an establishment there. The tax the Viceroy wants, he will have to come here to collect it. All toll gold is placed into our treasury. Only Dutchess or I can pay those taxes. Our treasury is well guarded."

"As for the future, I only say this. PaxLair City will always remain loyal to the Mayor. Unlike a Viceroy of another city we speak of. As the mayor handles the politics, PaxLair City will have forces to help the Mayor keep order. Even through evil and good."

His tone and manner, measured and thoughtful, the Viceroy continued, "My tower was once called the Chaos tower here. Then the necromancers tower. The other tower was Order. That balance outside keeps these towers in balance. As do Dutchess and I in this city."

Tatania then quietly stated, "I have one specific question for you Sir, and mean no disrespect with it."

Darius replied, "What is your question?"

"Viceroy Darius, do you find it difficult, given your nature, to keep balance?", she asked.

Darius' answer came rapidly as if he had thought of this himself before, "I do not keep the balance. The powers of PaxLair City do. I am balanced by the Dutchess. Together, we have the balance."

Tatania continued, "Thank you Sir. Would you like to add anything else for our readers?"

Darius replied, "I will only say that our tactical plans for the future remain secret. Only the mayor may know all things. Such is our loyalty."

Looking to Duchess then, Tatania asked, "Would you care to add anything Deputy Viceroy?"

DutchessVanHorn replied, "I feel many people have been judging our toll without knowing all the details"

Saturday April 10 - The Crone, Inu seemed to have taken up residence near PaxOku for a short time.  To find her one had to travel south from the Homare-Jima moongate to the temple. At the time of publication however, she had left this area and moved on to somewhere else.

Tuesday April 11, 2006, found this reporter at The Ladies of the Lair in PaxLair Felucca. PaxOku's First Son came into the tavern for a drink. Orin showed everyone a book and made some bold statements concerning his father, Viceroy Gareth.

In brief, Orin stated that the Lord Gareth who had withdrawn from PaxLair and given the BLT to the Mayor of Zento was actually a daemon named Black Widow, a shape-shifter who is posing as Gareth.

Viceroy Gareth(?) at the PaxLair
Meeting (the one coughing)

Afterwards, the weekly PaxLair meeting in PaxOku was rather shocking.  Viceory Gareth led the meeting.  Dragons Watch Viceroy, John McBain, stated that DW has fought evil for a long time and would continue to do so.  Therefore, it had joined PaxOku's trade sanction against PaxLair City.

As the meeting continued, anger was rising from several different directions.  Things came to a head when Viceroy Gareth announced his new Deputy Viceroy, Queen Sara.

Tatania Karthina asked the Mayor to speak to the gathering then took the floor, telling of the statements Gareth's son, Orin had made not even an hour earlier. The meeting erupted into shouts of anger before the Mayor regained control by asking Gareth a question that only he would know the answer to. Gareth was not able to answer the question and soon left with Queen Sara.

Soon after, lights and sparks were seen over the old BLT site.  Everyone's attention shifted from the meeting to the strange sight across Monk's Crossing.  Many hurriedly left the meeting to rush across the road. Gareth and Queen Sara were obviously performing some dark magic.  Explosions rocked the foundation of the building, light and sparks filling the night sky with it's brilliance.  The pair were chanting and soon disappeared.  A portal had been opened to the underworld, allowing daemons and heroes access to our realm.

Gareth came stumbling by, making his way to his office, where Lenora and Oda followed to see to him.  Soon after, the three of them returned, Lenora and Oda both proclaiming that the true Gareth had returned. He told of the portal and a way to close it back up.  True evil and True good had to work together in trust, performing the same spell that was used to open the portal.

Viceroy John McBain of Dragons Watch
recants DW's support to the
Trade Sanction

Lord Darius was found and brought back to PaxOku, listening patiently as the problem was explained. He agreed to help if Gareth would drop the trade sanctions.  Gareth replied that those were null and void as it was not actually him who had made them.

After hearing this, Viceroy John McBain said "DW lifts its embargo for now, but has not decided on the best path yet."  Obviously DW may have been inadvertently drawn into a situation of good versus evil that really did not exist.  However, DW remains cautious and will likely watch the evil of the PaxLair community very closely.

So, two of the Viceroys of PaxLair -- Lord Darius of PaxLair City and Lord Gareth of PaxOku -- trusted in each other, worked together to close the portal through a ritual of phrases.  These phrases were:

Gareth (good): I call upon the Great powers of Good

Darius (evil): I call upon the Great powers of Evil

Gareth (good): To bend the fabric of time

Darius (evil): To bend the fabric of worlds

Gareth (good): For both powers to come together

Darius (evil): To work as one

Gareth (good): To rebuild the walls between the Underworld

Darius (evil): The land of the living

Gareth (good): and the land of the Upperworld

Darius (evil): To keep the souls and powers of the damned and demons there

Gareth (good): To keep the souls and powers of fallen heroes and warriors there

Gareth (good): By the power of the statue of light and the power of the light let my will be done.

Darius (evil): By the power of the evil necro tower and the power of Dark let my will be done.

None know how many daemons escaped the portal during the short time it was open, but one thing is for certain. For now, Peace reigns in PaxLair and the balance is restored.
