| Subject: | My First Doom Hunt with DBx |
Stuffing my backpack full of reagents and a few Greater Heal wands, I walked about a bit, to make sure I could carry it all. I was a little anxious about making my first trip to Doom. Heeding Neo's advice, I arrived early at the Drunken Bull Shoppe. A few moments later, I was joined by Scruffy Rumbelly. I was glad to see my old friend. At least I would not die alone tonight. Scruffy asked me what weapons would be best for Dungeon Doom. I was glad I had read all that I could about Doom, so I could safely tell him that he would need Undead and Daemon slayers for this night's adventure. Scruffy rushed off to gather his weapons and when he returned, we began wondering why no one had shown up to join us. Scruffy said there was another Drunken Bull house up the road, a bit to the north. We walked to the Drunken Bull Roadhouse to see if anyone was there. What a huge house it was! Such a lovely garden on the roof. Walking up the steps, we found a very nice pub inside, and a man named Thesias, who seemed a bit distracted. His distraction was due to a dead guildmate needing his help, but it did not diminish his hospitality. Thesias invited us to join him in the guildhall downstairs and to make ourselves at home, while he rescued his guildmate. The dead guildmate turned out to be a lady named Veronica. She told us she had been dead a long time! She regaled us with the tale of her death, which happened several days ago. Veronica seemed to be in good spirits, despite being dead for such a long time. However, she informed us that she did not feel well enough to join our Doom hunt. I hope to see her in a future hunt, as she was a very personable lady. There was a dye tub full of some ghastly fire orange color, which Scruffy used to dye his clothes. Thesias said, "Ah, I see someone knows about the battle orange!" Scruffy replied, "Umm, no, but I guess right." Thesias explained that we wear the battle orange for the Doom hunts for easier healing, but since we were such a small group tonight, it was probably not necessary. I was relieved, because I did not want to look like a bright orange pumpkin, like Scruffy! While waiting for more people to arrive, we talked about the DBx guild colors, their history, going all the way back to Felucca, and their guildmistress, Rayven Stormglow. Thesias was sure that Zog was going to arrive any minute. I was hoping he would too and wondered if Neo would be joining us. Although it was well past the hour, no one else arrived. We took a short trip to Nidaros to look for more adventurers, but there was not a soul around. Thesias boldly declared that that the three of us and his trusted pet, Albion, would brave Doom on our own. He opened a gate and we stepped into it's inviting glow. We were lucky upon our arrival in Doom and only saw some restless souls and Chyloth yelling for the guards. "Are there guards in Doom?" I wondered. I did not see the dreaded Skeletal Dragon that I had read about. Before I knew what was happening, I was invited to sail upon Chyloth's boat. It was a strange crossing. Everything was obscured by a light blue mist and I could not see the water we were sailing upon, nor any shore in sight. Somehow, we magically arrived upon a beach! Hearing a lot of commotion in the last finger of the gauntlet, we headed there. We quickly joined the fray. Thesias was right about the orange color making it easier to find one's friends in all that mess! I only lost sight of Thesias a few times, when he was standing between Albion's front legs. How sweet! I only needed to see them to keep a check on their health. Half serious, and half in jest, I told Scruffy, Thesias, and Albion that if an artifact magically appeared in my pack, I would never know it, because I was too busy watching their health! Little did I know, how true my words would prove to be. We did several rounds of the gauntlet, when I noticed that I was low on reagents. It became the jest of the night, my constantly running out of reagents. Thesias said we could buy reagents at the Mage Shop. A Mage Shop in a dungeon! My stars! The man could make a fortune, if he would only branch out to other dungeons! Unfortunately, the mage only had a limited number of reagents displayed for sale. With what I was able to buy, and the reagents Scruffy generously gave to me, I was able to go a few more rounds of the gauntlet, before I had to approach that stingy mage to buy more. After returning from one of my many reagent shopping trips, I felt guilty to find that Thesias had died. And another time, Albion had died. Thesias jokingly said that we needed to get me some kind of lower reagent count artifact. I cannot recall the name, but if it helps me to keep those around me safe, it sounded like a great artifact to have! I think Scruffy and I died only once, so the entire party did not suffer as many deaths as I thought we would. As the hour grew late, Scruffy and I decided to call it a night. We said our farewells to Thesias and Albion, but not before asking how to get out of this place! Thesias told us to take the gate on the beach and it would take us out of Dungeon Doom. Scruffy and I returned to PaxLair. I checked the things I had picked up in Doom and was not surprised to find that all of them were not even fit for the dustbin, all except the feathered hat that Scruffy gave me, which had a lower reagent count of twelve percent. I had not put it on in Dungeon Doom because I needed the protection my own hat afforded me. I left Scruffy to take a short nap. Upon awakening, I checked my pack and saw all the gold I had collected in Doom. I decided to use the gold to replenish my reagents from the shops of the realms, where I knew they would not be in such short supply, like they were in Doom. I also noticed this black staff in my pack. "What is this?" I wondered. I knew I would not pick up such a worthless weapon, and even if I had, I would have placed it in a pack that I have reserved for junk. I touch the black staff and it magically turns ice white in color. Not only is this strange and perplexing, but I am growing alarmed! I touch it again and I can feel the magic properties of this weapon. It is a "Staff of the Magi"! Now, Sibelius will truly think me the "Archmage of the Infinity"! I must remember to thank Thesias, Albion, and Scruffy for this gift. The Goddess has never been one to bless me with luck. I can only think that Scruffy brought me luck. Albion's tenaciousness earned us many rights we might not have otherwise had, and being bathed in the golden glow of Thesias' shield has allowed me to be blessed with such a gift! I shall treasure it, always. My thanks to all of you! |
