PaxLair's Second Year Anniversary Celebration Held

January 19, 2000

Speech at the Anniversary Celebration

I wish to thank all who were able to attend our Second Year Anniversary Celebration in PaxLair. I will venture to get more news out about the celebration as soon as I can.

I really appreciated the opportunity to talk to many people who I have seen regularly and some for not in a very long time. I know it was a busy night and I did not get around to see everyone.

I had a rather lengthy speech, which I know put some of you to sleep, but I talked as quickly as I could and there was much on my mind to tell all of you. I am very pleased so many of you put up with me as I drolled on about various things. I have included my speech below for those who could not hear well or who could not attend.

The bottom line of what our Third Year will bring is a renewed commitment to the entire community of the realm. We are working hard, and step by step, on various initiatives which hopefully many of you will find interesting and offer opportunity. PaxLair is not a city just for PaxLair, it is a city for all and that is our baseline. We honor that baseline and build upon it.

Again, thank you all for coming! I hope we see you again soon, and not just in one year from now.

Sincerely with deepest appreciation,
Winfield, Mayor of PaxLair

HAIL ONE AND ALL! WELCOME TO PAXLAIR'S 2ND YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!

I am Winfield, an Old Man and the Mayor here. I thank you for coming out to see the end of our second year, and to be here for the beginning of the third year of PaxLair.

Please bear with me for about 15 minutes as my speech is lengthy as usual. I will speak as quickly as possible and I hope to not put anyone to sleep.

*looks over at the orcs*

Please gather up closer at any time if you can not hear. There is no offense in moving around to hear better.

Anniversaries are a time for reflection and also a time for thought towards the future. Many of you have been an integral part of PaxLair in many different ways over the past two years. Many of you remember the good old days of the Dreadlords, and the paintball matches, and the quests like Gehenna. As we progressed the culture of PaxLair became more known as a place of neutrality and peace for all to enjoy.

Please allow me to reflect upon a few things from the past year.

New and old establishments in PaxLair have breathed new life into our town over the past year.
The Ladies of the Lair came to PaxLair and was blessed a few months ago by the gods.
Eli has established one of the best carpenter shops in all the land.
Ostakker has the tailor shop to offer attire to every traveler.
The PaxLair Saloon was re-vitalized by the efforts of Nevilar, Minsk, and Kyleria Dawn.
Luigi's Pizzeria, which now also has the famous Bard Cherveny as co-proprietor. Listen to his great songs! Welcome him to PaxLair!
The Arts Centre put on the fantastic play "A Christmas Carol" hosted by Azazel's Events for Players.
The Quest Center and Casino offered many a game and quest for all.
The PaxLair Survival Shop gave significant over-the-counter service and Vienne has taken on the task of our Chamber of Commerce.

Finally, the Second Chance Provisioner, or SCP, has maintained its second full year of constant over-the-counter service as one of the oldest and most regular shops in Britannia.

In fact, tonight, I wish to honor the SCP and its leadership from Thelorn and Steelman, to Justin Credible, to Crimson Dragon for maintaining this model establishment. Are my friends Thelorn, Steelman, and Crimson Dragon present?

Ah, please step forward Crimson Dragon.

I decree that SCP is awarded a prime vendor location of their choosing on any town-owned building within PaxLair to offer their finest goods to many weary travelers in need. They will be expected, of course to continue to offer even more over-the-counter service in their shop. *smiles*

I wish to make this a new program in PaxLair where the Chamber of Commerce may select a new shop each quarter of the year for such a distinction, honor, and ceremonial dedication. This would then relieve the former shop of their vendor location. I guess all good things don't last forever, but all shops can thus participate in such a program.

During my first year anniversary address, I stressed that last year would be a time for realism in government. We made great strides by developing a town council of 10 people of many different backgrounds. I also had three great chancellors: Mystarr, Tycho Veg, and Shen who have since gone onto other things. Today, I have two chancellors: Rhyssand and Ruglug. You all probably know the significance of having an orc on the Mayor's staff to demonstrate and ensure neutrality for our town.

As we move into the third year, I have need of another chancellor. Someone who has proven herself very, very worthy. Kyleria Dawn, please step forward.

Kyleria Dawn, it is my honor to ask you to please accept your appointment as a chancellor of PaxLair. Do you accept?

Kyleria Dawn: Aye

I thank you Kyleria Dawn. You have proven yourself worthy of trust, loyalty, and leadership within our town. I hearby grant to you a Mayor's Staff and a place in my office to aid all people who live here and come here.

I thank you and congratulations Kyleria Dawn!

Our culture remains our most vital component in PaxLair. This PaxLair culture is not stagnant, and is only a piece of the culture within the entire shard. The Olag Hai Orc Clan, the Clan of Vampires, the Caitiff, the Woodland Elves, the Xun Verin, the Wraiths, the Death Knights, the PaxLair Knights, the Kobolds, the PaxLair Wizards, the witches of Shadowcove, the Healers of Chesapeake, the Lupars, and many, many more beings bring color not just to PaxLair but to the entire shard. This is what makes Chesapeake the most interesting and robust shard of all shards. We in PaxLair vow to do all we can to help all beings, through our sense of neutrality, in any way we can.

Much of this culture is chronicled within our huge library here in this tower and in the ether, maintained diligently by Dene and Kyleria Dawn. Your quests and wonderful epic quests, like Dragar, are also chronicled on the fantastic service called UO Chesapeake.

Recently, as you know, the orcs discovered ruins in our town and I have decreed January 14 as an orc holiday in PaxLair. Also, the orc ruins and their orc temple are declared holy ground. Openly taking on neutral relations with the orcs is a solid demonstration of what this town is for, and what PaxLair means... "Peace Place".

Also, we have grown to enjoy wonderful relationships with many player towns in this realm... Aryslan, Corwyn, Dragon's Bay, Gehenna (*winces a bit, and smiles*), Haven, Humility, Marrach Lir, and Shadowcove. We also welcome new relations with Eternal Bay, Oberon Pass, and Spirituality.

I wish to recognize PaxLair's new emissary to Eternal Bay, the town just to our west. He is Vladimere Payne.

As PaxLair moves into its third year of many years to come, I set our objectives to continue to enhance our strong commercial establishments, increase our government services to all people, increase relations with other towns, and continue to welcome all races and beings to PaxLair. We will create new opportunities, like the shrine room in the chaos tower where Friar Hipocretes conducts services.

PaxLair is a crossroads, ladies and gentlemen. It is not a guild. It is not a closed group. It is a town, perhaps now of the size of a city. It is open to all and for all. That is our baseline, that is our parent philosophy. We do not seek competition; we seek cooperation so that all groups and towns may move forward for the benefit of all peoples on the Chesapeake Shard. My vow is to make this philosophy even stronger in the year to come. The people make PaxLair. The people make this shard. We work together in a dangerous realm of varying cultures, many at odds with one another. Our destiny is not to have global peace, but to have global respect and a heck of a lot of fun together!!

I thank you for listening to this old man's words. Please enjoy the festival and meet all the people you can.

Please now, I invite all of you to the cafe to enjoy Jyhm's and Cherveny's new and original songs! Later, I will hold another brief ceremony at the new Memorial House. Please enjoy the festival!
